Poland Part 1

Well, folks, I'm finally posting the pictures I promised. I'm going to break it up into multiple posts again. Our trip began on Friday, February 4th. Andrew's parents drove us down to the cities, and we met Laura in the Minneapolis airport. We flew out at 3:30 and flew straight to Amsterdam. We had almost three hours to sit at the gate in Amsterdam before our flight left. I have not yet mastered the skill of sleeping in planes or in airports, but Andrew and Laura were able to catch a few winks. We got there early in the morning, so it was dark. When Andrew woke up, he pointed out the window and asked, "Is that green grass out there?" Sure enough, there was no snow in Amsterdam or in Radom when we got there. Quite a change from snowy Minnesota. We got to Warsaw Saturday afternoon and met the missionaries we would be working with. We took a rented bus for the two hour drive to Radom. After getting there and dropping everyone off at their respective living places, we met again at the Ministry Center. The Ministry Center is a rented room in the same building as the church (also a rented room), and they hold different Bible Studies, along with the homeless ministry, there. We had pizza for supper and talked about the coming week. No, there was not a time for resting scheduled in here; by the time I got to bed that night, I had gone 36 hours without sleep. Yeah...I was not speaking cohesive sentences at that point. On Sunday, we went to church, then to a restaurant called Teatralna's for lunch with the team before heading to the Snyder's apartment for a team meeting. That's Ryan on the left. He is a new long-term missionary in Radom. Across from him are Steve and Bernatka Snyder, one of the permanent missionary couples. Next to Steve in the green sweater is Kim. Veronika, Steve and Bernatka's daughter. Daniel, Steve and Bernatka's son, and Andrew. L-R at this end table: Sue, Vera, Dave, Bob. Bob and Vera are the other permanent missionaries we worked with, and I stayed with them for the first week we were there, along with Sue and Dave, who are both from Nebraska. Veronika's nalesniki My Margharita (cheese) pizza. The joke was that this was the only Margharita (pronounced just like the drink margarita) I could have because I was the only team member (besides the kids, obviously) who was still underage. For the first week, we went in pairs to local high school English classes giving presentations on American culture. Andrew and I were paired up, and so our presentation was all about Minnesota. Most days, after everyone was done giving presentations at about 12:30, we would meet at the Snyder's apartment and walk to the Ministry Center where two sisters from the church made us a meal everyday. On Tuesdays, though, they are busy making a meal for the homeless, so we went to another restaurant. Tim, who was on the team last year, came again with his wife Kim, and their five kids. It was such a blessing to have those kiddos around! Kim's parents, Gary and Jo also came. Clockwise from bottom left corner: Andrew, Gary, Amos, Aiden, Asa, Aly, and Kim. Ryan, Bernatka, and Bob. Bob does not like getting his picture taken. Daniel and Andrew decided to take advantage of the wait for the food to catch up on some sleep. Behind Andrew is Laura, Dave is next to her, and Sue is next to Dave. My strawberry nalesnikis. They tasted as good as they look. Andrew got the same thing. After each of our presentations in the schools, we invited the students to come to the English workshop the next week, and to a Virtual Camping Trip across the USA that Friday night. I put together a power point of different national parks and places to visit across the country, then the team members all took turns explaining the different places. In the above picture, Andrew was just hanging out before we began, and Amos came to join him. No, Amos isn't sleeping, just relaxing. The daughter of another missionary couple in Radom who helped us a bit with the workshop was sitting on Laura's lap clicking through the pictures on the slideshow. I told her she could take a picture with my camera, so she whipped it up, and snapped this one of me. Andrew and Asa on Friday night. After the gathering at the church, Andrew, Ryan, Laura, and I (as the young people on the team) went over to the youth pastor's house with the whole youth group. We had tacos and hung out. Andrew made fast friends with Marek's (the youth pastor) son Jasiek. Jasiek went into his room and got his sword and shield, and Andrew went into the kitchen and got a wooden spoon and pot lid. They went at it for a good 15 minutes. So cute! And that ends our first week in Radom. More to come...

It's funny to read it after month (almost) :-) And, my dear Julie, Marek's son's name is Jasiek, you could translate it as Johnny ;]
